Like him or not, you have to admit, Kasey Kahne had one hell of an evening Saturday night, as he was voted into the All Star Challenge and then went on to win it among a chorus of cheers from the fans in attendance. It must feel pretty good to be Kasey Kahne right now. He has the best sponsor he could have, just ask Dale Jr., he is 308 points ahead of where he was at this time last year, and he just won one million dollars in the race that everyone just wants to win. I had forgotten how popular he was, those fans were almost as loud as they were when Dale Jr. was leading it, but they really hadn’t had much of a reason to cheer for him of late. He hasn’t won a race since October 2006, that season he won six of his seven wins, including both races at Charlotte.
Voted into the Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway after he failed to make the field in the Sprint Showdown qualifying race, Kasey Kahne made the most of his opportunity by winning the All-Star event and the $1 million prize that goes with the victory.
Taking fuel only during his final pit stop between the third and fourth segments of the four-segment, 100-lap event, Kahne won the All-Star race for the first time. It looked like Kyle Busch was just going to drive away with this race, the announcers mentioned that when Gibbs first started with Toyota that they could produce engines with a lot more power, but they didn’t last very long, and they said they could have went to that package just for this race. It was almost a great move on their part, if it hadn’t let go, they would have easily beaten everyone I think.
The Coca Cola 600 should be a great race next week, with Dale Jr. running well in this race, as well as Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Kasey Kahne and Sam Hornish Jr. I just hope Gordon can learn something from Jr. this week; it would be great to see him resume his dominance at Charlotte.

Here are some of the All Star Challenge videos we have found online from the Nascar All Star Challenge that was won by Kevin Harvick. There are quite a few of the Busch brothers taking each other out, so I think that moment was popular, it was funny when Kurt said he wasn’t eating Kellogs for a long time. I thought Gordon was going to have something for Harvick, but Gordon had a tire go down and ended up finishing 11th. Johnson had a run on Harvick on the final lap, but could not complete the pass; he finished second, with Mark Martin, who said Johnson was a heck of a race car driver, finishing third. The good thing for Harvick’s crew is he said he would share the million dollars with them if they won the race. There are some happy wives in Charlotte tonight.
An interesting wreck happened earlier, when Kyle Busch made a big run on Kurt Busch, who was passing another car, Kurt didn’t give him any room, they touched and Kyle lost the rear end of his car which came around and knocked Kurt into the wall, taking out his own brother. I did not catch an interview with Kyle, but they did catch up to Kurt, with Dick Bergren calling him Kyle and then apologizing really quickly, hehe. Kurt said maybe he should’ve given him a little room, but, it’s the all star race. He said he would be talking to Kyle about it and that he would not be eating any Corn Flakes for awhile.
Matt Kenseth won two segments and Kyle Busch won the other. I guess I was wrong on my prediction, had Gordon not had the flat tire, I think it would’ve been pretty close. We’ll see what happens in the Coca Cola 600 next week, but, it looks good for Hendrick Motorsports again, if you ask me.

Martin Truex Jr. came on late in the 2 20 lap shootout Nextel Open, passing Carl Edwards and Johnny Sauter to take the lead and earn entry into the All Star Challenge. Johnny Sauter is in as well as the first two spots get a transfer to the All Star race. Kenny Wallace was voted in by the fans after the big push with a website dedicated to getting people to vote for him, as well as advertising on his race car.
So far the challenge race has been pretty good, Kenseth just got caught speeding on pit road, looks like Gordon will be restarting in the first position now. Johnny Sauter continues to run well, I expect him to easily end up in the top 10 at least.

Here is the format for the All Star Race this year, as posted on Nascar.com.
This years All-Star Challenge’s new format consists of four, 20-lap segments for the teams that won a Cup Series event during the 2006 or 2007 seasons.
Additionally, two drivers will qualify for the premier event by finishing first and second, respectively, after two 20-lap segments in the Nextel Open.
Finally, one driver will once again join the All-Star Challenge field by winning the Fan Vote.
Teams will have the option of pitting after the first 20-lap segment of the event, giving up their respective on-track position by doing so.
A mandatory 10-minute stop will follow the second 20-lap segment. Teams will resume their position at the start of the third segment.
Following segment three, all remaining participants on the track will circle the track under caution. Each team will then conduct a pit stop under race-like pitting conditions.
The order of the teams exiting pit road will serve as the starting lineup for the fourth, and final, 20-lap segment.
I don’t think this race is long enough, but I guess I’m just being selfish, because I would like to see more racing. Humpy Wheeler and countless other websites are picking Jimmie Johnson to win it. I think they will only be partially be right, he will win a couple segments, but I see Jeff Gordon completing the pass on or near the last lap to win it. Hooty Hoo.

Nascar and Humpy Wheeler are getting together to discuss changes to the all star race in Charlotte, in hopes of jamming even more excitement into the two and a half hour race segment. The current format is a 90 lap non-points race for a million dollars, the field is made up of everyone who has won a race this year and the previous, past all star race winners, cup champions from the previous 10 years and the winner of the Nextel Open, which consisted of everyone not allready in the all star race. They recently also added a fan vote to add one more driver. They have considered adding some of the top drivers from the Busch and Truck series, but, to me, if they were already worthy of being in the race, the would already be driving a Nextel cup car.
The format is also being examined and will likely change from its current three-segment form. The race currently starts with a 40-lap segment, followed by a 10-minute break in which teams are allowed to work on their cars.
That’s followed by a 30-lap run, a yellow-flag pit stop, and a final 20-lap dash for the cash.
They are also considering tying the all star race and the pit crew challenge together, maybe with the winner of the pit crew challenge being on the pole of the all star race.
“We might end up shortening the segments some,” Wheeler said. “We like that final 20-lap dash, the racing has always been very good over that final 20. But we’re looking at a way to get rid of all the lulls in the action.”
The only lulls in the action I remember are the periods between the segments, so they need to shorten the breaks, run more laps and have more wrecks, that should make it more exciting for everyone. And, with all of the commercials they have been showing recently, maybe they just need to cut out more of those, as a full third of the time spent is watching commercials. I say, lets add a challenge, after each segment, the second place finisher can challenge the winner to a fist fight, we could call it Nascar Fight Night, and I bet it would be one of the most watched segments.
